Dexter Horton
Welcome to the website!

At this time - and for quite some time, I hope - I am playing drums for a band that has long been one of my favorites - The Super Grit Cowboy Band (www.SuperGritBand.com). Anchored by roots-music legend Clyde Mattocks, the SGCB has established a reputation that most bands can only dream of: over 32 years of performing and still going strong; five singles reaching Billboard's Top 100; performances on national television shows; being backed by the North Carolina, Richmond, VA and Alabama's symphony orchestras, and sharing the stage with more national and international acts than I can begin to list here. Considering that the last 14 of my 16 years have been spent performing with Super Grit's co-founder Bill Lyerly ( see below ), being chosen to fill the drum chair in SGCB is more akin to being invited to a gracious and long-awaited homecoming. By now I think you probably "get" the idea that I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to once again be part of a musical legacy, as well as to belong to a small and pretty exclusive musical family - that of the Super Grit Cowboy Band. To say that I am honored to be a part of this incredible organization is certainly an understatement....

As I said earlier, I was laying it down for 14 years, playing drums and performing with RCA/Broadcast recording artist Bill Lyerly, I have 6 internationally acclaimed CD's - the last one mastered at Abbey Road Studios in England - made the stage for over 2000 shows, and aquired enough memories to fill a James Michner novel to show for it. All the while, never missing even ONE of those 2000+ shows due to illness, fatigue, or injury - and I'm still going!

In addition, I am a long-time drumset instructor for the nationally recognized Progressive Music Center (Progressive Percussion Drum Studios), teaching students both in our Raleigh, NC location, as well as our Wake Forest, NC location.

Thanks for dropping by!

"I'm here to testify about my good friend and exceptional fellow musician
Dexter Horton. I've been very blessed to have been able to play with some awesome players in the Outlaws I was with two great drummers, David Dix
and Monte Yoho, who as double drummers were quite a chugging machine
and were a joy to play bass with.

One of my proudest moments was recording and getting to know Mitch Mitchell
of Jimi Hendrix fame. I have fond memories of jamming with Paul Riddle/ Marshall Tucker, the late great Buddy Miles, and our own favorite son Kenny Soule.

As a bass player, I've been so lucky to have been kicked in the ass by the best.
Let me tell you, Dexter Horton is as good as any of these names I've mentioned. What he and they all have in common is that they play from their heart, their own way, and more importantly all have the professional ear and courtesy of knowing when not to play.
Dexter is steady as a heartbeat.

I've always said that many own drums, but few own tempo. Dexter is dead on, can play with drive at a low volume, or bring down the house. As a person, Dexter is as genuine and as RELIABLE as they come. I am very biased, as he is my friend and I love him and his playing. Be you a student or bandmate, relax,
let Dexter worry about the beat. Whenever given the chance, I will."
